Jam Hsiao is called “the Rain God” due to his seemingly magical ability to always summon the rain when he travels. Legend has it that a once-in-a-century torrential storm raged on in a city he was touring in. But that’s not all. Hsiao also once ended a 100-day drought after taking the stage, and even his first album’s master tape got stuck in New York due to mysterious weather-related reasons…at this point it’s simply not a coincidence that Hsiao and the rain appear together everywhere he goes. Just this week as we work on the GOAT Talk episode with him, it’s been raining nonstop in Shanghai. Of course, the word “God” in his nickname doesn’t only refer to his relations with the rain, it also represents his status in the Mandarin pop music scene. Having been in the industry for almost 15 years now, Hsiao has caught the hearts of many with his catchy and infinitely replay-able songs, cementing himself as one of the greatest in the modern Mandarin pop music business. Although his fans often have to travel under harsh weather conditions to see him, we here at Complex would like for you to simply relax, make yourself comfortable, and listen to Jam Hsiao talk about who he thinks are the greatest of all time, without getting soaked in the rain.
The Challenge King of One Million Star
The talent show One Million Star was the Taiwanese star-studded equivalence of American Idol, but Jam Hsiao’s 2007 appearance was rather unconventional at the time when he showed up as a challenger. Performing two of Gary Chaw’s songs, Hsiao successfully beat Xu Renjie and Aska Yang in his first two rounds of challenges. Although he lost in the third round, Hsiao has proven enough of what he’s capable of that in the very same year, pop superstar A-Mei invited him to collaborate on the song “A Moment” from her studio album, STAR. The song became an instant hit, and was widely regarded as the most difficult duet song at the time. This success instantly put Jam Hsiao on the map.
Performing at Taipei Arena at the age of 22
In 2008, Jam Hsiao got signed by Warner Music Taiwan, officially beginning his journey as a Chinese-language musician. His debut album, Jam Hsiao Self Titled Album, managed to bring onboard popular artists like Mayday, F.I.R., and Sodagreen, making its way to the top on various music charts and becoming a huge success. People were mesmerized by Hsiao’s sonorous and explosive voice, and by the time his second album Princess came out in 2009, no one was surprised to see it become an even greater hit, while tracks like “Princess” and “A-Fei's Little Butterfly” are still widely played in the KTV’s today. Later that year, the then-22-year-old Jam Hsiao held a concert in Taipei Arena, the youngest to ever do so at the time. From singing at the pubs to becoming a challenger on TV to finding mainstream success, Jam Hsiao has achieved so much in so little time.
Fight hate with talent, challenge the world
At the 2010 Spring Festival Gala, Jam Hsiao managed to finish his performance while suffering from laryngitis, leaving a strong impression on the Mainland audiences and subsequently sparking a debate on the use of lip-sync in live performances. Having already achieved a lot of recognition from his first three albums, Hsiao officially began his world tour, “There's a Spirit Called Jam Hsiao.” Hsiao then went on to release his fourth album, It’s All about Love, and won for Best Male Singer in the 2013 Taiwan Golden Melody Awards, becoming one of the biggest stars in the scene.
Rock ’n Roll at heart, take LION to new heights
Jam Hsiao participated in Singer 2017 as the lead singer of LION and successfully advanced to the finals. He continued to put more time and effort into this rock band he formed eight years after his start in the industry, having now published three albums and realizing Hsiao’s rock ’n roll dream. On top of that, Hsiao has also been doing a lot of charity events and acting on the side. The sky is simply not enough of a limit for what the “Rain God” is capable of.
